Thanks to Justin and Amie

A couple of weeks ago I received the following email (censored for some anonymity) from a friend and former colleague in our Canberra office:

Subject: Lolly jar guessing competition

Hi litigation colleagues,

A couple of weeks ago we got an email telling us litigation was $120 down on its Oxfam fundraising chocolates. Amie and Justin have come up with a solution that's as delicious as it is noble.

a lolly jar guessing competition!!!

There's a jar of lollies on Justin's desk. How many lollies in the jar? Guess right and the jar is yours!

A guess will cost you $1 - if everyone on the floor has 2 or 3 guesses we write off our collective debt and an impoverished village in a developing nation gets a veggie garden.

It's winner takes all and the judge's decision is final. The winner will be announced at morning tea on Friday 21 October 2005.

Let the conjecture commence!

Well, we have just been notified that the competition is over and a winner has been announced...

Subject: And the lolly jar goes to---

The lolly jar guessing competition has now come to an end. The winner, with a correct guess of 276 lollies, is Jenny.

Guesses ranged from 142 to 830 (with a couple of guesses at 1000 and 2000, the seriousness of which might be called into question). People tended to guess high - as the graph below demonstrates, the correct guess was in the lower third of responses.

Most importantly, we raised $126 for Oxfam, thus repaying our collective debt with interest. Well done and thank you to everyone who participated.

Cheers,
Justin and Amie

A HUGE THANKS to Justin and Amie for organising that competition and donating the lollies. We're touched by their spirit of generosity (or the generosity of spirit as I described it in my thank you email!) and thank everyone who had a guess, seriously or wildly!
